How a Half-Day Lagoon Tour Works

From picking a morning or afternoon slot to the drop-off at your hotel.

  1. Pick a morning or afternoon

The H2O half day runs in the morning or the afternoon. Choose the slot that leaves the rest of your day the way you want it.

  2. Get picked up

Hotel or port pickup is included. The GetYourGuide version of the same trip notes that pickup is by boat, from your hotel dock or a meeting point.

  3. Snorkel three or four spots

The listing names a manta ray stop, an inner-reef coral garden and an eagle ray stop, with a fourth spot chosen on the day if time allows.

  4. Back in 3.5 hours

The trip lasts 3.5 hours with no meal on board, so the rest of your day stays free.

HALF-DAY GUIDE

Which Half-Day Lagoon Tour Fits Your Day

How long each one takes, morning or afternoon, and what you give up against a full day.

A half day on the Bora Bora lagoon means 2.5 to 4 hours on a small boat, usually with pickup from your hotel, two to four swim stops and no lunch. It suits you if you are paying for a resort and want part of the day on your own deck, if your cruise ship is in port for one day, or if you want a second lagoon outing on another morning. This page sorts the half days by the time they take and what they do with it.

How Much Time Each Half Day Takes

The shortest trip here is Moana’s Eco Snorkel Cruise at 2.5 hours, from $113 per person in September 2026. Its itinerary has two named stops: 100 minutes on a sandbank searching for blacktip reef sharks and stingrays in knee-deep water, then 30 minutes at the Coral Garden. The same trip is on GetYourGuide as the Eco Shark and Snorkeling Safari, from $108.

At 3.5 hours sit the two snorkel-led trips: H2O’s half-day shared boat tour, from $130 per person, and the Reef Discovery half day, from $136.

Four hours buys a little more cruising. The Lagoon Service half-day cruise is from $136 per person, and Rohivai’s half-day lagoon safari on GetYourGuide is from $113. The Rohivai itinerary shows how those four hours break down: about 20 minutes by boat each way, a 10-minute safety briefing and 3.5 hours on the lagoon.

Morning or Afternoon

If you want the trip to fit around the rest of your day, check the departure times first. The H2O listing sells a morning or an afternoon trip, and its GetYourGuide version gives pickups between 8:00 and 8:50 for the morning. Moana leaves main-island hotels and the Vaitape pier at 9am or 1pm. Reef Discovery’s listing describes heading to the manta ray feeding ground first thing in the morning, so treat it as a morning trip and confirm the time when you book.

A morning trip leaves your afternoon free for the pool, a spa booking or a sunset dinner. An afternoon slot is useful on a day when you arrive late or want a slow breakfast. Wind and cloud can reduce visibility at any hour, which one H2O reviewer mentions, so keep a spare day in your plans if snorkeling is the main event.

What the H2O Half Day Does With 3.5 Hours

The H2O half day visits three or four snorkel spots chosen on the day. The listing names a manta ray stop, a natural coral garden on the inner reef and an eagle ray stop, with a fourth spot if time allows. H2O states that it does not feed the animals and does not visit sites where they are drawn in by feeding, which means it skips the shallow sandbank where people stand among blacktips and stingrays.

Bookings are capped at seven people, and the GetYourGuide listing says groups are no larger than six or seven. You must be able to climb the boat’s ladder out of the water on your own, a medical certificate is required from age 70, and the trip is not offered to people over 80. It holds a 5.0 rating from 769 Viator reviews, and the same trip is on GetYourGuide as the Small Group Snorkeling Boat Tour from $129, with 4.9 from 18 reviews. Read our H2O breakdown for the full itinerary.

Sharks and Stingrays, or Mantas and Coral

The easiest way to choose a half day is by what you want to swim with.

  • If you want to stand in shallow water among blacktip reef sharks and stingrays, book the Moana Eco Snorkel Cruise, the Lagoon Service half day or the Rohivai half-day safari. The GetYourGuide version of the Lagoon Service trip names three stops: stingrays, a coral garden, then blacktip and lemon sharks, with a light snack on a sandbank. Rohivai’s trip is also on Viator as the half day lagoon safari from $152.
  • If manta rays, eagle rays and coral are what you want, book H2O or Reef Discovery. Reef Discovery visits the manta feeding ground, two coral gardens and, if conditions allow, the eagle rays. It includes fins and holds a 5.0 rating from 1,042 Viator reviews.

Mantas are wild and never guaranteed on any of these trips. H2O says it regularly encounters them, which is as far as any listing goes. Our snorkeling tours page compares these boats on stops, gear and help for nervous swimmers.

What You Give Up Against a Full Day

The main thing a half day leaves out is lunch on a motu, a small islet in the lagoon. The Lagoon Service full day runs 6 hours, from $174 per person, with snorkel stops and a lunch served on a private motu. That is $38 more than the Lagoon Service half day, and $61 more than the two $113 half days.

On a half day the food is light at most. H2O and Moana list bottled water; Reef Discovery adds soft drinks, and its GetYourGuide version adds local snacks and fruit; Rohivai serves fresh fruit. If the beach lunch matters to you, see our page on lagoon tours with motu lunch.

Private Half Days

For a boat to yourselves, three private trips run for about the same time. La Plage Tours’ Private Bora Bora Lagoon Experience lasts 3.5 hours and costs $610 per boat for up to four guests, with the captain stopping wherever you choose. H2O’s private boat tour runs in the morning or afternoon at $650 per group of up to four, and Reef Discovery’s private half day is $745 per group of up to two. Split four ways, the La Plage boat comes to about $153 each.

Where to Go Next

If you are weighing a half day against a longer trip, read our full-day lagoon tours comparison. For the shallow-water encounters, see shark and ray tours, or go straight to our H2O half-day breakdown. If a morning or afternoon on the lagoon is what you want, check availability and compare both platforms before you pay.
