CORAL GARDEN GUIDE
The Bora Bora Coral Garden: What to Know Before You Book
Where it is, what lives there, beginners, and which tours stop there.
The Coral Garden is the stop on a Bora Bora lagoon tour where you float face-down over coral heads and reef fish in clear, shallow water. Most shared lagoon tours include a coral stop somewhere between the stingrays and the ride home, so the real choice is how long you get there, what gear the boat supplies and how much help the guide gives in the water. This page covers where the Coral Garden is, what lives there, whether beginners can manage it and which tours name it in their listing.
Where the Coral Garden Is
The site most people mean by the Coral Garden lies in the shallow water between Bora Bora’s main island and Motu Pitiuu Uta, one of the small islets on the south-east side of the lagoon. The bottom there is mostly sand between coral formations, which keeps the water calm and easy to float in.
The name is used loosely, though. Tour listings talk about “a coral garden”, “coral gardens” or, in Reef Discovery’s case, “two renowned local coral gardens”, and H2O’s listing says its guides choose sites each day based on conditions. One reviewer on the Lagoon Service half day described “the coral garden near the airport”, which suggests the name travels between more than one site. If a specific spot matters to you, ask the operator which coral site they plan to use on your date. You cannot reach it on foot from the main island; everyone arrives by boat.
How Tours Reach It, and How Long You Stay
Most tours collect you from your hotel or the Vaitape pier and run a loop of the lagoon with two to four swims. The coral stop is usually one of the middle ones. On the Lagoon Service half-day cruise the GetYourGuide version of the same trip sets out the order: stingrays first, then “one of the best-preserved coral gardens in the lagoon”, then blacktip and lemon sharks, and finally a sandbank stop for coconut bread and fruit.
Only two listings give a time for the coral stop. The Moana eco snorkel cruise spends 30 minutes at the Coral Garden after a 100-minute shark and ray session. The Manu full day with lunch on Motu Fanfan gives it 60 minutes, alongside a manta stop, a shark and ray stop and a long lunch on the motu. The others leave the timing to the guide.
What You See
The Moana listing describes “a multitude of colorful tropical fish” living around the reef, and the Manu listing adds that stingrays sometimes pass through. Snorkel guides to the site mention parrotfish, angelfish and butterflyfish, plus moray eels tucked into the coral and the odd blacktip reef shark. Reviews on these tours talk about the colours of the coral and the sheer number of fish swimming close to the mask.
Manta rays and eagle rays are a different stop. Some tours pair the coral garden with a manta site, but no listing promises a sighting, and the operators that mention mantas say they are seen “regularly” or “sometimes”. Our manta ray page covers which tours go looking for them.
Can Beginners Snorkel the Coral Garden?
Yes, for most people who are comfortable in water. The coral stop is generally shallow and calm, and several listings build in help for nervous swimmers. The Lagoon Service GetYourGuide listing includes a life vest and says all snorkeling takes place in shallow water with a certified guide close by. The Reef Discovery half day says no prior experience is required, includes fins, and offers life jackets to less confident swimmers.
A few tours ask more of you. The H2O small-group half day asks that everyone can climb in and out of the water on a ladder unaided, and wants a medical certificate from anyone aged 70 or over. The Moana cruise supplies mask and snorkel but no fins, and suggests you bring your own gear and a towel. The Manu full day lists towel, fins and sunscreen as not included.
Whatever you book, float over the coral and keep your fins off it. Two listings suggest biodegradable sunscreen, so pack a tube from home.
Which Coral Garden Tour to Book
- The Lagoon Service half day suits first-timers and families who want the coral stop plus sharks and rays in four hours, with gear, towels, drinks and a snack included. In September 2026 it started from $136 per person on Viator (5.0 from 202 reviews). The same trip is on GetYourGuide from $133 as Lagoon Tour and Snorkeling Experience.
- The Moana eco cruise suits you if time or budget is tight. It lasts 2.5 hours from $113 per person, with a stated no-feeding policy for sharks and rays. The same trip is on GetYourGuide from $108 as the Eco Shark and Snorkeling Safari.
- The Manu full day suits you if you want the longest coral stop and a lunch on a motu, from $146 per person for seven hours. The boat collects you from the water’s edge near Tiare Market, not from your hotel.
- The H2O half day suits confident swimmers who want coral plus a real try for mantas and eagle rays in a small group, from $130 per person (5.0 from 769 reviews).
- Rohivai’s half-day lagoon safari on GetYourGuide takes in coral gardens and blacktip sharks in four hours from $113 per person, with fresh fruit and drinks.
If coral is your whole reason for going, Rohivai also runs a half-day Coral Discovery tour built around three coral stops, from $121 per person. It had only nine reviews in September 2026, so it has a much thinner record than the tours above.
The comparison table lines up the three main picks side by side. Prices change, so check the live figure on the booking page.

Bora Bora Coral Garden — Frequently Asked Questions
Location, marine life, beginners, prices and which tours stop at the coral garden.
The site most people call the Coral Garden sits in shallow water between Bora Bora's main island and Motu Pitiuu Uta, a small islet on the south-east side of the lagoon. The name is used loosely, and tour listings often say a coral garden or coral gardens, with guides choosing the site on the day. If one spot matters to you, ask the operator which coral site they plan to visit on your date.
Not on foot. The Coral Garden is out in the lagoon, so everyone arrives by boat, usually as one stop on a shared or private lagoon tour. The tours on this page collect you from your hotel, or in Manu's case from the water's edge near Tiare Market. A private boat also works if you ask the captain to include a coral stop. See Bora Bora snorkeling tours for the full range.
Expect coral heads and a lot of colorful reef fish close to the surface. Snorkel guides to the site mention parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and moray eels, and the Manu listing says stingrays sometimes pass through. Blacktip reef sharks turn up now and then. Manta rays are usually found at a different stop, and no listing guarantees any particular animal on your day.
Yes, for most people who are comfortable in water. The coral stop is generally shallow and calm. The Lagoon Service listing on GetYourGuide includes a life vest and says snorkeling takes place in shallow water with a guide close by, and Reef Discovery says no prior experience is needed and offers life jackets. Tours that need a ladder climb, like H2O's, ask a little more of you.
Several listings name it. Moana's eco snorkel cruise has a 30-minute Coral Garden stop, Manu's full day has a 60-minute one, and the Lagoon Service half day visits one of the lagoon's best-preserved coral gardens, per its listing. H2O, Reef Discovery, Rohivai and Vavau all list coral gardens too. The comparison table sets out three of them side by side.
In September 2026 the shared tours on this page started from $113 per person for Moana's 2.5-hour eco cruise on Viator, or $108 for the same trip on GetYourGuide. The Lagoon Service half day started from $136 per person and Manu's full day with lunch from $146. Prices change with date and option, so check the live figure on the booking page before you pay.
It depends on the tour. Moana's eco cruise lists 30 minutes at the Coral Garden and Manu's full day lists 60 minutes. The Lagoon Service half day and the other small-group trips do not give a time, as the guide adjusts each stop to the group and the conditions. A half-day tour usually fits three or four swims in total, of which the coral garden is one.
Usually not, but check what each boat supplies. Lagoon Service includes mask, snorkel and fins, and Reef Discovery includes fins too. Moana supplies mask and snorkel but no fins and recommends bringing your own. Manu lists towel, fins and sunscreen as not included, so pack them. If you have a mask that fits you well, it is always a good idea to bring it.
The site is shallow and generally calm, and on guided tours the guide is in or near the water with you. Stay within sight of the boat, float over the coral and keep your fins off it, both to protect the reef and to avoid scrapes. Tours can be changed or cancelled in strong wind, and one Lagoon Service guide offered a guest a full refund on a choppy day.
Many families do. The Lagoon Service half day sells child tickets for ages 4 to 12 and infants ride on an adult's lap. Moana's eco cruise has a child rate for ages 4 to 11, and Reef Discovery asks that children are accompanied by an adult. A life vest helps younger swimmers. Our half-day lagoon tours page compares the shorter trips families tend to prefer.
Swimwear, a hat, sunglasses and biodegradable sunscreen, which two of the listings ask for. Bring a towel on tours that do not supply one, such as Moana and Manu, and fins if you are on a boat that does not include them. Water shoes are on Rohivai's packing list. A rash vest helps if your skin burns easily, as Reef Discovery suggests.
Guests on these tours rate it highly. The Lagoon Service half day held a 5.0 rating from 202 Viator reviews in September 2026, and reviewers often single out the coral garden and the number of fish. Much of the snorkeling happens in the shallow lagoon, with coral, rays and blacktip sharks close to the surface. See the best Bora Bora lagoon tours to choose a trip.
